Summary
Hypericum richeri, commonly known as Alpine St John’s-Wort or Richer’s St. John’s Wort, is a perennial herb native to alpine and subalpine zones in Central Europe and the Balkans. It is typically found in open habitats such as grassy slopes, meadows, and pastures, as well as in the understory of open forests. This plant grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters), forming a bushy clump. Alpine St John’s-Wort is characterized by its bright yellow, showy flowers that bloom in the summer, which are attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
The plant is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to thrive in challenging mountainous environments. It is often used in rock gardens, borders, and as ground cover due to its low maintenance and adaptability to various soil types. Alpine St John’s-Wort prefers full sun to part shade and medium draining clay or loam soils. It requires medium amounts of water, making it suitable for gardens with moderate watering regimes. While generally disease-resistant, it can sometimes be affected by rust or leaf spot. It is not known to have aggressive roots or to be particularly invasive when grown outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
