Summary
Hypericum elodes, commonly known as Marsh St John’s-wort, is a semi-evergreen perennial herb native to acidic, marshy ground, bog pools, and pond margins in Western Europe, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. It forms dense mats and typically grows to a height of 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) with a similar spread. The plant features hairy, pale green, rounded leaves and bears bright yellow, cup-shaped flowers with a resin-like scent during the summer months. The flowers are showy and attract a variety of pollinators.
Marsh St John’s-wort is valued for its ground-covering ability in wetland gardens and for its ornamental flowers. It is often used in bog gardens, water garden margins, and for naturalizing in damp areas. This plant prefers full sun to part shade and thrives in acidic, wet to consistently moist soils.
