Summary

Hesperantha coccinea, commonly known as River-Lily, is a semi-deciduous perennial bulb native to grasslands and marshy areas in South Africa. It typically grows to 60 cm (24 in) tall, with slender lanceolate leaves up to 40 cm (16 in) long and 1 cm (0.4 in) broad. The flowers are striking, with colors ranging from red to occasionally pink or white, each 30–35 mm long, with six petals; they bloom prolifically four to ten at a time on a spike from late summer to autumn, adding vibrant color to the garden.

River-Lily is valued for its showy flowers, which make it a popular choice for ornamental garden planting and use in floristry. It is relatively hardy, tolerating temperatures down to between −5 to −10 °C (23 to 14 °F), but in colder regions, it is often grown under glass to protect it from frost. For optimal growth, River-Lily prefers full sun to part shade, consistent moisture, and well-drained soil. It is not commonly known to suffer from serious disease or pest problems, but it can be susceptible to rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
