Grusonia parishiorum, commonly known as Parish’s club cholla or matted cholla, is a low-growing cactus native to the arid environments of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts in California and Arizona. It typically forms dense, spreading mats that can reach up to 8 inches in height. The cactus is characterized by its fleshy tubercles and formidable spines that can grow up to 2 inches long. During the late spring to early summer, it produces yellowish flowers that give way to yellow fruits, which can be up to 3 inches long. The flowers are relatively inconspicuous compared to the showy blossoms of some other cacti.

Parish’s club cholla is valued for its drought tolerance and its unique, textured appearance, which adds visual interest to xeriscapes and rock gardens. It is well-suited for cultivation in arid regions and requires minimal maintenance once established. This cactus prefers full sun exposure and thrives in sandy, well-draining desert soils. It is important to avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. While not commonly used for culinary or medicinal purposes, it serves as an important source of food and shelter for desert wildlife.
