Summary
Goodyera velutina, commonly known as Velvet Rattlesnake Plantain, is a perennial herb native to East Asia, particularly thriving in moist, shaded areas with rich, well-drained soil. This species typically grows slowly to a height of 0.5-1.5 feet (0.15-0.5 meters) and features a rosette of velvety, dark green leaves with striking white veining, which adds textural interest even when the plant is not in flower. The white flowers, which are showy, bloom in the summer on a spike above the foliage, attracting pollinators such as bees.
Velvet Rattlesnake Plantain is valued for its ornamental foliage and flowers, making it a suitable choice for woodland gardens, shade gardens, and naturalized areas. It is also used in native plant gardens to support local ecosystems. In cultivation, it requires part shade to maintain its vibrant leaf coloration and prefers medium or fast draining loam or clay soils with consistent moisture. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be sensitive to drought and excessive sun exposure. There are no significant disease problems or aggressive root issues, but it should be noted that this plant is not tolerant of foot traffic and should be placed accordingly.CC BY-SA 4.0
