Glandora prostrata, commonly known as shrubby gromwell or purple gromwell, is an evergreen subshrub native to the Mediterranean region, specifically coastal areas, rocky slopes, and scrublands of Portugal, Spain, and France. It typically forms low, dense mats up to 20 cm high and spreads to about 50 cm wide. The plant is characterized by its small, lance-shaped, dark green leaves and vibrant blue, funnel-shaped flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer, adding a splash of color to the garden landscape.

Shrubby gromwell is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine beds, and as ground cover in coastal gardens. It requires minimal maintenance once established and is resistant to deer and rabbits. Full sun exposure is ideal to promote abundant flowering. ’Grace Ward’ and ’Heavenly Blue’ are popular cultivars, both awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for their outstanding qualities, including more intense flower color and robust growth.
