Ficus microcarpa, commonly known as Chinese banyan, Malayan banyan, Indian laurel, curtain fig, or gajumaru, is an evergreen tree in the fig family. It is native to a range from China through tropical Asia and the Caroline Islands to Australia, where it thrives in tropical rainforests, river edges, coastal areas, swamps, and mangroves. Typically, it reaches about forty feet (twelve meters) tall with an equal spread in Mediterranean climates, but in its native tropical and humid subtropical habitats, it can grow much larger and develop numerous prop roots. The species is well-adapted to low elevations and requires a warm climate and a humid atmosphere, though it can withstand temperatures close to 0 °C.

Ficus microcarpa is valued for its dense canopy and is widely used as a shade tree in urban environments. Its ability to withstand urban pollution makes it a common street tree in warm climates. However, its aggressive root system can cause damage to sidewalks and infrastructure, leading to its decline in popularity for urban planting.
