Eucomis autumnalis, commonly known as Autumn Pineapple Flower, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to the grasslands and open woodlands of Southern Africa. It typically grows to a height of 0.3-1 feet (9-30 cm) and a width of 0.3 feet (9 cm). The plant forms a rosette of strap-shaped leaves, and in late summer to early fall, it produces a spike of greenish-white flowers, resembling a pineapple, hence the common name. The flowers are quite showy and are followed by seed capsules that also provide ornamental interest. The plant’s overall appearance is unique and exotic, with a flower spike that can last for several weeks.

Autumn Pineapple Flower is valued for its unusual flower spikes and long-lasting cut flowers. It is suitable for border planting, rock gardens, and as a container specimen, adding a tropical flair to temperate gardens. It requires full sun to part shade, medium water, and well-drained soil to thrive. While it prefers fertile soil, it is relatively low maintenance once established. In colder climates, it should be planted in a sheltered position and mulched in winter or grown in pots that can be moved indoors. The species has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its excellence for garden use.
