Summary
Eucalyptus spathulata, commonly known as Swamp Mallet, is an evergreen tree native to the seasonally wet flats and valleys, often associated with saline or alkaline soils, in the southwest of Western Australia. It typically grows to a height of 10–25 meters (33–82 feet) with a trunk diameter of 1–2 meters (3 feet 3 inches – 6 feet 7 inches), occasionally larger in older specimens. The tree features a dense crown with smooth, satin-like bark that is greyish brown or reddish brown in color. The glossy green, linear leaves are distinctive, and the tree produces flower buds in groups of three or seven, followed by white flowers and cup-shaped to conical fruit. The flowering season is from summer to early autumn, and the flowers are not particularly showy.
Swamp Mallet is valued for its ability to thrive in challenging conditions, including saline and poorly drained soils, making it suitable for reclamation projects and as a windbreak in agricultural landscapes. It is also used for ornamental purposes in large gardens and public spaces. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and tolerates low water conditions, preferring soils with medium to fast drainage. While it has a high to moderate growth rate and can live beyond 15 years, it is relatively low maintenance once established.CC BY-SA 4.0
