It typically grows 2 to 8 feet tall and wide. The shrub reproduces from seeds and root sprouts, and its name refers to its strong, pungent scent. Rubber Rabbitbrush blooms from August to October, producing showy, golden-yellow flowers. Flower heads consist of five small, yellow, tubular disk flowers clustered in umbrella-shaped terminal groups. Depending on the subspecies, leaves can be long and narrow to spatula-shaped, and both the flexible stems and leaves have a greenish-gray hue with a soft, felt-like covering.

Rubber Rabbitbrush is valued for its drought tolerance and is used in xeriscaping for its ornamental golden-yellow flowers and gray-green foliage. It is also appreciated for its ability to thrive in a wide range of coarse, alkaline soils typical of desert environments. Pruning in early spring can enhance its ornamental appeal.
