Summary
Epilobium alsinifolium, commonly known as Chickweed Willowherb, is a perennial herb native to alpine and subalpine zones, as well as arctic tundra regions across Europe, including mountainous areas with an Arctic climate, and extending to Greenland. It typically forms low, dense clumps ranging from 4 to 10 inches in height. The plant features a basal rosette of wide, rounded leaves, with narrower leaves ascending the stem. From mid to late summer, Chickweed Willowherb produces delicate purple or pinkish trumpet-shaped flowers that are quite showy, followed by fruit in the form of slender capsules containing numerous seeds.
Chickweed Willowherb is valued for its ability to thrive in cool, moist environments, making it suitable for rock gardens or as a ground cover in shady, damp areas of the garden. It prefers consistently moist soil conditions and can tolerate partial shade, although it will bloom most prolifically in full sun. This species is not commonly found in cultivation but can be an attractive addition to native plant gardens or restoration projects where its natural beauty and hardiness are assets. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in overly wet conditions. It is not known to be invasive and does not typically present significant problems with diseases or pests.CC BY-SA 4.0
