Desmodium elegans, commonly known as Spiked Ticktrefoil, is a deciduous perennial subshrub or herb native to the understory of deciduous forests, forest edges, and grassy slopes in Central China and the Himalayas. It typically grows to a height and width of 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 meters) and features trifoliate leaves and erect, branching stems. The plant produces clusters of small, pink to purple flowers which are quite showy during the summer and fall months. The flowers give way to characteristic jointed seed pods that stick to clothing and fur, aiding in seed dispersal.

Spiked Ticktrefoil is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, making it beneficial for improving soil fertility. It is used in naturalized plantings, as a border plant in gardens, and for erosion control on slopes due to its robust root system. This plant prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade and requires medium amounts of water. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage.
