Summary
Coprosma foliosa, commonly known as Forest Mirrorplant, Karamu, Pilo, or Leafy coprosma, is a perennial shrub native to the coastal forests, forest margins, and shrublands of Hawaii. This species is adaptable, sometimes taking on a vine-like form when growing among taller vegetation. It typically reaches a height and width of 7-13 feet (2.1-4 meters). The Forest Mirrorplant has small, yellow or greenish flowers that are not particularly showy, blooming in the spring and summer. Its foliage is glossy, contributing to its common name, and can provide a lush, dense appearance in the landscape.
The Forest Mirrorplant is valued for its attractive, shiny leaves and its ability to adapt to a range of garden settings. It is used for ornamental purposes in gardens, often as a hedge or screen due to its dense growth habit. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium or fast-draining loam or sandy soils, with medium water requirements. While it is not known for major disease problems, it can become invasive in some regions outside its native range, so gardeners should consult local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
