Summary

Chrysophyllum oliviforme, commonly known as Satinleaf, is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to coastal hammocks, limestone outcrops, and sandy soils of tropical hardwood forests in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Greater Antilles. It is named for its distinctive leaves, which are dark green and glossy on the upper surface and a contrasting coppery brown beneath, giving a satin-like sheen when rustled by the wind. Satinleaf typically grows between 3 and 5 m (9.8 and 16.4 ft) in height but can reach up to 10 meters (33 feet) under optimal conditions, with trunks up to 30 cm (12 in) in diameter. It flowers year-round in some regions, with small, inconspicuous creamy yellow flowers. In areas like Puerto Rico, flowering occurs from July to October, with fruit maturation in February. The dark purple fruits resemble olives in size, have a gum-like skin, and contain several black seeds within the whitish flesh.

Satinleaf trees are valued for their ornamental appeal, with the striking two-toned foliage providing visual interest in landscapes. They are used in yards, public spaces, and as understory trees in larger gardens. The tree is relatively easy to maintain, tolerates a range of soil pH from 5 to 8, and has moderate drought and salt tolerance. However, it is sensitive to frost and can be damaged by temperatures below 0 °C. For successful cultivation, Satinleaf prefers full sun to part shade, medium water, and well-drained soils. It is not commonly associated with serious diseases or pests, making it a resilient choice for tropical and subtropical gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
