Summary
Cestrum macrophyllum, commonly known as Large-Leaf Cestrum or by its regional names Galan Del Monte in Puerto Rico and Rufiana in the Dominican Republic, is an evergreen shrub. It is native to the understory of tropical forests from Mexico to Central America, where it thrives in the dappled sunlight and moist, well-drained soils. This species can rapidly grow to a height of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters) and is recognized for its large, lance-shaped leaves and tubular flowers. The flowers, which are typically green or yellow, are quite showy and bloom profusely from spring through fall, attracting pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies.
In cultivation, Large-Leaf Cestrum is valued for its extended blooming period and its ability to adapt to a range of garden conditions. It performs well in full sun to part shade and prefers medium to fast-draining clay, loam, or sandy soils. Regular watering is necessary to keep the plant healthy, especially during dry periods. While it is not commonly used in urban planting, it can be an attractive addition to mixed borders or as a background plant in tropical-themed gardens. However, gardeners should be aware of its potential to become invasive outside its native range and should consult local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
