Summary

Callistemon comboynensis, commonly known as Cliff Bottlebrush, is an evergreen shrub native to the coastal cliffs, forest margins, and scrublands of Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. It typically grows to a height of 0.3–5 m (1–20 ft) and features hard, fissured bark. This species is characterized by its striking spikes of red flowers, each with 31 to 41 stamens; the filaments are red to crimson, and the anthers are a dark purple. Flowering occurs from March to December, producing a showy display that attracts pollinators such as birds and bees. After flowering, it develops woody capsules that are 4.1–7 mm (0.2–0.3 in) long.

Cliff Bottlebrush is valued for its ornamental flowers and adaptability to a range of garden settings. It is often used in temperate gardens for border planting, as a specimen shrub, or for attracting wildlife. It thrives in full sun and requires medium amounts of water, preferring soils with medium to fast drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and may attract pests such as scale insects. Pruning after flowering can encourage a more compact growth habit and enhance the shrub’s ornamental appeal.CC BY-SA 4.0
