Calandrinia ciliata, commonly known as Fringed Redmaids, is an annual herb native to open grasslands and rocky sites in western North America, extending to South America. It exhibits a variable growth habit, sometimes forming a low mat only a few centimeters wide, while other times reaching up to 40 cm (16 in) in height. The leaves are linear or lance-shaped, ranging from 1 to 10 cm (0.39 to 3.94 in) in length, with a slightly succulent texture, which helps the plant conserve water. The inflorescence is a raceme with numerous flowers on short pedicels. Each flower features five vibrant deep pink to red petals, each up to 1.4 cm (0.55 in) long, and two sepals at the base, creating a striking display when in bloom.

Fringed Redmaids is valued for its drought tolerance and vibrant floral display, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens, wildflower meadows, and xeriscaping. It thrives in full sun, requiring low to medium water, and prefers well-drained soils. While it can adapt to various soil types, it performs best in sandy or gravelly substrates. Its ability to self-seed makes it an easy plant to naturalize in suitable climates.
