Summary
Bobea gaudichaudii, commonly known as Alahee or Iliahialoʻe, is a moderately growing evergreen tree endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It thrives in a range of habitats from dry to mesic forests and shrublands, typically at elevations from sea level to 2,000 feet. This species can reach heights of 15-30 feet (4.6-9 meters) and is characterized by its smooth, light gray bark and glossy, elliptical leaves. The small, fragrant white flowers bloom in the spring and are followed by tiny, round, orange fruits that are attractive to birds.
Alahee is valued for its hard wood, traditionally used for making tools, and its resilience in various environmental conditions, making it suitable for native plant restoration projects and xeriscaping. It is also used ornamentally in gardens and landscapes for its attractive foliage and flowers. Alahee prefers full sun to part shade and does well in medium draining loam soils. It requires moderate watering, especially in drier conditions, but is drought-tolerant once established. While it has no major disease issues, it can be susceptible to pests like scales and mealybugs.CC BY-SA 4.0
