Billbergia horrida, commonly known as the Horrid Billbergia, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the Atlantic Forest biome of Eastern Brazil, particularly thriving in the understory of moist, shaded areas. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters). This bromeliad has a striking appearance with rosettes of tough, spiny-edged leaves and a distinctive inflorescence composed of pink bracts and greenish-purple flowers that emerge in the spring. The flowers are somewhat showy due to their contrasting colors and unique form.

Billbergia horrida is valued for its exotic, architectural foliage and its ability to adapt to indoor environments, making it a popular choice for houseplant enthusiasts and for use in subtropical and tropical garden settings. It is often grown in containers or mounted on pieces of wood or bark to mimic its natural epiphytic growth habit. This plant prefers bright, indirect light or part shade, consistent moisture with good drainage, and high humidity. While generally low-maintenance, it is susceptible to mealybugs and scale insects.
