Ayenia microphylla, commonly known as Dense Ayenia, is an evergreen subshrub or shrub native to the arid and semi-arid regions, including desert scrub and chaparral in the Southwestern United States and Northeastern Mexico. It is a compact plant, typically growing to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 0.7-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters). Dense Ayenia has small, dark green leaves and produces inconspicuous red and white flowers in the spring and fall, which are followed by unique, lantern-shaped fruits that are attractive to wildlife.

Dense Ayenia is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in challenging environments, making it suitable for xeriscaping and as a low-maintenance ground cover in arid gardens. It is also used in habitat restoration projects. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and well-drained soils, and it can tolerate medium amounts of water once established.
