Asplenium adiantum-nigrum, commonly known as Black Spleenwort, is a semi-evergreen fern native to a wide range of habitats including rocky slopes, crevices, and walls, as well as deciduous and mixed woodlands throughout Africa, Europe, and Eurasia. It is also found in parts of Mexico and the United States. This fern typically forms dense clumps reaching up to 4 inches long, with thick, triangular leaf blades that are divided into several segments. The fronds emerge from a central rhizome and are borne on reddish-green petioles. While it is true that in Hawaii, Black Spleenwort can be found on cinder cones and lava flows, it is more commonly associated with moist, shaded habitats in its native range.

Black Spleenwort is appreciated for its hardiness and adaptability, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens, green roofs, and as a ground cover in shaded areas. It is also used in ferneries and for underplanting in woodland gardens. This fern prefers moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from part shade to full shade. It is relatively low-maintenance and can be an attractive addition to gardens due to its unique foliage texture.
