Aralia nudicaulis, commonly known as Wild Sarsaparilla, is a perennial herb native to the understory of deciduous forests, mixed woodlands, and shaded areas in northern and eastern North America. It typically grows 30–60 cm (12–24 in) tall, with distinctive creeping rhizomes. The plant features large, compound leaves that are finely toothed, emerging in the spring. The foliage provides a lush, green backdrop in shaded garden areas. From May to July, Aralia nudicaulis produces tiny white flowers in three globe-shaped clusters, each 4–5 cm (1.6–2.0 in) wide, on tall scapes that rise to the same height as the leaves. These flowers are not particularly showy but are followed by more noticeable purple-black berries that are both edible and attractive to wildlife. The leaves typically go dormant in summer before the fruits ripen, offering a unique seasonal dynamic in the garden.

Wild Sarsaparilla is valued for its adaptability to different light conditions, making it suitable for full sun to full shade locations. It requires medium amounts of water and thrives in soils with slow to medium drainage, making it a versatile choice for naturalized areas, woodland gardens, and shaded borders. While the plant is relatively low-maintenance, it can spread through its underground stems, which should be considered when planting in smaller spaces. There are no major disease issues, but it may occasionally suffer from leaf spot.
