Summary

Androsace villosa, commonly known as Hairy Rock Jasmine, is a perennial herb native to the alpine and subalpine zones of the European and Asian mountains, particularly thriving on limestone scree and rocky slopes above 4921 feet (1500 meters). It is well-adapted to cold, harsh conditions and short growing seasons. This plant forms small, compact tufts or mats with rosettes of linear to elliptical leaves, each up to 1 inch across, and is notable for being covered with fine hairs that help insulate against cold temperatures.

Hairy Rock Jasmine is valued for its delicate appearance and its ability to thrive in rock gardens and alpine troughs, where it adds texture and color. The plant produces charming flowers that vary in color from white to red-purple, each with a distinctive pink or yellow eye, blooming from late spring to early summer. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy en masse. In cultivation, it requires well-drained soil, preferably alkaline, and should be placed in full sun to partial shade. It is relatively low maintenance but needs protection from excessive winter wetness to prevent root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
