Summary
Alsophila capensis, commonly known as the Forest Tree Fern, is an evergreen fern native to the moist forested areas and shaded stream banks of Southern Africa. It exhibits a slender, erect trunk that can reach up to 4.5 meters (15 ft) in height and about 15 cm in diameter, topped with a crown of arching, lacy fronds that can span several meters. The fronds unfurl from coiled croziers, creating a distinctive and elegant display. This species is highly variable, with some forms having broader or more divided fronds than others.
The Forest Tree Fern is valued for its lush, prehistoric appearance and is often used in shaded garden areas, ferneries, and as a focal point in subtropical and temperate landscapes. It requires a sheltered position away from strong winds and benefits from high humidity and consistent moisture, mimicking its native cloud forest conditions.
