Summary
Albizia lebbekoides, commonly known as Indian Albizia, is a deciduous tree or large shrub native to tropical monsoon forests and dry deciduous forests in Southeast Asia and nearby islands. It can reach heights of 50-80 feet (15-24 meters) with a canopy spread of 30-60 feet (9-18 meters). The tree’s form is typically upright with a rounded crown, and it features compound leaves that create a light, airy texture. During the summer, it produces an abundance of fragrant flowers in shades of yellow, green, pink, and white, which are highly attractive to pollinators. The flowers are followed by flat seed pods that persist into the winter.
Indian Albizia is valued for its rapid growth and the dappled shade it provides, making it suitable for large gardens, parks, and as a street tree in tropical and subtropical regions. It is also used for reforestation projects and to provide quick canopy cover. This species is drought-tolerant once established and prefers full sun conditions. It thrives in a variety of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to pests such as the mimosa webworm. Additionally, its ability to self-seed and spread rapidly makes it potentially invasive outside its native range, so it is important to consult local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
