Aesculus chinensis var. wilsonii, commonly known as Wilson’s Buckeye or Chinese Horse Chestnut, is a deciduous tree native to temperate regions of China. It is typically found in a variety of habitats including mixed forests, forest margins, and along streams. This species grows at a moderate rate to a height of 15-30 feet (4.6-9 meters) and a width of 15-25 feet (4.6-8 meters), with a rounded to broad-spreading form. The leaves are palmately compound, providing a lush, green canopy throughout the growing season. In spring, it produces panicles of white or pink flowers that are quite showy and attract pollinators. The flowers give way to smooth, globular, brown fruits known as conkers or horse chestnuts.

Wilson’s Buckeye is valued for its ornamental flowers, which add aesthetic appeal to gardens and landscapes. It is used in urban settings for shade, as a specimen tree, or in large border plantings. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring medium amounts of water and thriving in loamy or clay soils with medium to fast drainage. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it is adaptable to a range of light conditions. Gardeners should be aware that the seeds and other parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.
