Summary
Adiantum jordanii, commonly known as California maidenhair, is a perennial fern native to the understory of coastal forests, streambanks, and moist canyons in California and Oregon, as well as Northwestern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) with a similar spread. The delicate, fan-shaped, pale green fronds are composed of many small, rounded segments, each with two to four lobes that may split. The underside of each segment bears one to four sori, which are clusters of spore-producing structures. The fronds emerge from thin, black stems, creating a graceful and airy appearance.
California maidenhair is valued for its elegant foliage and is often used in shaded garden areas, including native plant and wildlife gardens, where its natural beauty can be appreciated. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and prefers part shade to full shade conditions. Regular watering is essential to maintain the lush appearance of the fronds.
