Acer distylum, commonly known as Vine Maple, is a deciduous tree native to the cool temperate forests of Japan, specifically on the island of Honshu. It thrives in the understory of these forests, where the soil is typically moist and rich in organic matter. This maple can reach up to 33 feet (10 meters) in height and is notable for its unlobed, deeply cordate (heart-shaped) leaves that are 4 to 6 inches long. The foliage emerges with a pinkish hue before turning green and then a vibrant yellow or red in the fall, adding seasonal interest to the landscape.

Vine Maple is appreciated for its graceful form, attractive bark, and striking fall color. It is often used in ornamental plantings, including small gardens and woodland settings.
