Summary
Acacia decora, commonly known as Western Silver Wattle or Showy Wattle, is a perennial shrub native to dry sclerophyll forests and Eucalyptus woodlands in eastern Australia. It typically grows to a height of 3-13 feet (1-4 meters) and has an erect to spreading habit with reddish to brown branchlets. The shrub features thin, narrowly elliptic to obovate phyllodes instead of true leaves, which are a common adaptation in Acacia species to reduce water loss. Acacia decora produces bright yellow, fragrant flowers in spherical heads from late winter to early summer (April to October), which are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees.
Western Silver Wattle is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its showy, bright yellow flowers and ability to adapt to a wide range of conditions, making it a hardy choice for gardens. It is often used in landscaping for habitat restoration, erosion control, and as a feature plant in xeriscaping due to its drought tolerance. In cultivation, it requires well-drained, stony sandy soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and may require protection from frost in colder climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
